The myth of the diner is that it was normally made from an old passenger car. Some early diners were made from old streetcars or horse cars, but this and any use of a passenger car was so unusual that it was done for its novelty purpose. (An apparent exception was located in Northampton, MA, opened in 1923.) The name "diner" did come from the railroad car that served food,
