- The Rensselaer & Saratoga built their loco and car shops just north of Tibbets.
(The complex seen at the top of the first topographic map, above the pink area.)
- [Photo c. 1900, from
the Tony Steele Collection.]
This photo shows the roundhouse to the
left and the gambrel-roof shops themselves
in the background. Unfortunately, we didn't
have room to model this, particularly as
it would make no sense in competition with our Rutland yard.
This old postcard view shows the back of the roundhouse,
with the car shops in the distance.
Note the wood fence surrounding the property.
The shops were real long.
In 1911, the D&H consolidated their loco repair operations in Colonie (behind the Arsenal
in Watervliet). The Green Island shops continued to repair freight cars, and frequently
made national news in the trade publications during the 1930's for their experimenting
with such things as light-weight steels, welding, etc.
Other views c. 1917 (photocopies of Valuation photos).
They are still standing c.
2002, although probably not much longer.
