Typically a horse car was a specialized baggage car. Despite the name, these cars carried race horses, who were treated like people and rode in passenger trains. (Horses used for on the farm or to haul tonnage like delivery vans traveled in stock cars. Horse cars really should be called "horse Pullmans" although that would also confuse things.)
