According to Charles Knoll (National Railway Historical Society's 1974 Bulletin, in 1911, the New York Central introduced several simultaneous changes to their track construction. In this year, they first started using cresoted ties, which were called "black" ties, as opposed to the older "white" ties. (I seem to recall railroads used some chemical like zinc chloride to preserve their ties, which might have in a sense bleached the wood.) The Central also started using tie plates on
