"Trellis" comes from Latin, meaning "woven from three threads". "Arbor" originally in Latin meant "tree", but apparently through French, the term came to mean a shady spot (shaded by trees) in a garden. A "pergola" is also from Latin, meaning an arbor or passageway with a roof of trelliswork. Open designs like this could also be free-standing and horizontal, and thus a fence.
