Apparently Clark started off with an axle plant. In 1917, they made a small vehicle to haul materials around the plant and visitors began to ask Clark to build some for them. In 1918, 8 "Tructractors" were built and the next year, they made and sold over 75. In 1920, they made their "Truclift", said to be the first industrial truck to use hydraulic power to lift a load.
