36 Foot Reefers

RF Reefers

Between 1901 and 1912, the Pennsylvania built over 37,000 XL box cars, which were 36 feet long, but had a steel underframe, with a shallow fishbelly side sill. The Pennsy used the same design for some 3,000 reefers. In May, 1922, all the PRR's freight reefers, including these RF class, were transferred to the newly formed Fruit Growers Express.
