Nowadays, kids play with "transformers" which have parts that pivot, swivel, and pull in or out. One minute the toy is an auto, next it is a giant robot. The railroads had "transformers" years ago, called Hart convertible ballast cars. In the April 1902 Railroad Gazette, there was a Santa Fe wood gon made by the Rodger Ballast Car Company. Down the center of the car between the trucks was a lengthwise hopper.
