According to John Ayto (Dictionary of Word Origins), the word "animal" comes from the Latin, meaning "to breathe", or in other words, "beings that breathe". It also gives us "animate" and less directly, "animosity" (from a concept of spirit to that of courage and finally to anger). Animals
