This section covers the line of poles that parallel
railroad tracks. For the poles that carried
electrical power and telephone lines that ran alongside
street and roads, see
this section.
Legend has it that Samual Morse's original
idea was to run the wires of his new
magnetic telegraph in a buried cast-iron
pipe. He obtained permission from the
Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to bury
the cable alongside their right-of-way
to run the first telegraph from
Baltimore, MD to Washington, DC.
