Introduction
There were certain materials that did not become available until a particular time, but in other cases, certain designs seen today were just not used back then. I have tried to consult with period sources to see what was being promoted when. My main source was a book on fences written in 1951 (see below), which I will refer to for brevity's sake as "the Sunset Book".
