Railroads and steam engines both were invented in the 1600 and 1700's, in the European coal mines, although it wasn't until the 19th century that steam engines were put on their own wheels on the rails so that they would be self-propelled. In a sense, coal cars predate even these developments, as they were simply wagons with flanged wheels added.

This contemporary heritage is even reflected in the terminology.
