The first offset hoppers for coal traffic were developed in 1926. By the 1950's, focus returned to ribbed hoppers, although by then, the twin hopper was all but out of production. Most offset hoppers were 33 feet long inside, and all the cars in this chapter can be assumed to be that long unless otherwise specified.
