Troy Table of Contents

I'm putting this in chronological order. (In some cases I'm quessing when it was published.) I am just getting started with this list.
  1. History of the The City of Troy, by Arthur Weise, 1876 . I haven't seen this.

  2. Troy's One Hundred Years by Arthur Weise. Published c. 1889.

  3. Troy City Directories. Published every year since the middle of the 19th century. The Troy Public Library has a complete set.

  4. Illustrated History of Troy (I'm not sure of the exact title), published in 1909.

  5. Troy and Rensselaer Country New York, A History, by Rutherford Hayner, 1925. I haven't read this.

  6. Scenes of Railroading in Troy, filmed by Albert Mallory in 1957-'64. Unpublished, but a video copy is shown during our open houses. Sixteen mm color film showing the depot area in its final days, demolition of the station, and the last train through downtown.

  7. Architecture Worth Saving in Rensselaer County, by Bernd Foerster, published by RPI 1965.

  8. Hudson-Mohawk Industrial Gateway by Jack and Diana Waite. Published in 1973. Available from the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway at the Burden Building or at the RiverSpark Visitor Center in downtown Troy. A photo and short history of many local industries in the Troy-Green Island-Cohoes area.

  9. Hudson Mohawk Gateway by Thomas Phelan. Published in 1985 by Windsor Publications. Covers the Troy-Waterford-Cohoes-Green Island-Watervliet area.

  10. Worker City, Company Town by Daniel Walkowitz - A social-economic study and comparison of Troy (where unionism for the workers had an early start) and Cohoes (where the Harmony Mills Co. owned the houses, stores, even the churches and thus dictated the life of their employees).

  11. History of Rensselaer County (I think this is the right title), by Steve Draper.

  12. Down From Troy by Dr. Richard Selzer. Published by Little, Brown & Co. An autobiographical account of growing up in Troy in the 1930's and on.

  13. Things That Aren't There Anymore, produced by WMHT, our local public TV station. Includes all-too-brief film clips of railroading in Troy shot by Charlie Ballard in 1952.

  14. See our NEB&W Visitors' Guide for an overview of Troy, and our Photo Gallery for more information and many prototype photos.

  15. Images of America: Troy by Don Rittner. Published by Arcadia Publishing. Arcadia has done a whole series of these books on local areas, including ones on Cohoes, Saratoga, and Lake George. Check out their web site.

  16. Troy In Vintage Postcards by Brian and Becky Nielson. Published in 2001 by Arcadia Publishing. E-mail them at sales@arcadiapublishing.com.
