Introduction

The large plate-glass window are of the steam-era store front had two distinct functions. One is to display any goods for sale. The other, more important one, is to bring in lots of light, back before florescent lamps were invented (pre-1938). This means that for some stores, you can figure out what to put in the windows - a grocery store would have groceries, for example. (And in good weather, a lot of goods were brought out onto the sidewalk.) But other businesses don't have any obvious display, like
